Hungrrr vs Flipdish: Which Restaurant Ordering Platform Is Better?

Hungrrr vs Flipdish: which is the better platform?

For most UK restaurants, Flipdish. Both platforms give you a branded website and app so customers can order from you directly instead of going through Just Eat or Deliveroo. That's where the overlap ends. Flipdish also has a cloud POS, self-service kiosks, AI marketing, AI phone ordering and tools for running several sites from one place. Hungrrr has none of those.

If you run a single takeaway and all you want is a website and an app, Hungrrr will do the job. If you've got a second site on the way, take a lot of orders over the phone, or you're sick of running the till, the website and the marketing on three separate systems, Flipdish is the better fit.

What is Hungrrr?

Hungrrr is a UK online ordering platform for restaurants and takeaways. You get:

  • a branded ordering website
  • branded apps on iOS and Android
  • a back-office portal for managing your menu
  • a loyalty programme
  • integrations with some POS systems
  • reports on orders and revenue

It's pitched as a way out of marketplace commission, and that's mostly who uses it: independent restaurants and small groups who want their own ordering channel and would rather not give Just Eat or Deliveroo a cut of every order.

For that job, it works. The scope is narrow, though. There's no POS, no kiosks, no AI marketing, and not much central control once you're running more than a couple of sites.

What is Flipdish?

Flipdish is a full restaurant technology platform. It's built for restaurants, takeaways, QSRs and multi-site groups who want every ordering channel on one system, plus the tools to get more of their revenue coming in direct.

Flipdish includes:

So the two overlap on websites and apps. Flipdish then adds the till, the kitchen screens, the kiosks and the marketing around them, all on the same system.

Why the missing POS matters

A website and app without a POS behind them means your online orders and your counter orders live in different places. Either someone keys the online orders into the till by hand, or you depend on an integration between Hungrrr and whatever POS you already have.

Hungrrr does integrate with some POS systems. Some, not all. If you're looking at Hungrrr, check that your POS is actually on the list before you sign anything, and ask how menu changes sync. If you change a price on the till, does it update on the app? Or do you change it twice?

With Flipdish, the POS, kitchen display, website, app and kiosks are the same system. An order from the app, the kiosk or the phone lands on the same screen in the kitchen as an order taken at the counter. Change a price once and it changes everywhere. You're also dealing with one support team when something goes wrong, rather than two companies pointing at each other.

That won't matter much to a one-person takeaway that does ten online orders a night. It matters a lot to a busy site on a Saturday.

The multi-location question

Once you have more than one site, things get harder. The menu has to stay the same across every location, or at least be different on purpose. You need to see how each site is doing and how the group is doing. Marketing has to work across the whole estate, not one shop at a time.

Flipdish was built with multi-site operators in mind. Central menu management, reporting across locations, group-wide marketing campaigns and the same kiosk and app across every site are all part of the platform. A group with ten locations can push a menu update or start a promotion across all of them in minutes from one dashboard.

Hungrrr does have multi-location features, but they're more limited. It was built mainly for independents and smaller operators. That's fine if you plan to stay that size. If you're opening a third and fourth site, it's worth asking Hungrrr exactly how menu changes, reporting and campaigns work across sites before you commit.

AI is where the gap is widest

Flipdish's AI platform does things Hungrrr doesn't offer at all.

Start with marketing. Flipdish spots customers who haven't ordered in a while and sends them re-engagement campaigns automatically. Each campaign is tracked against the revenue it brings in, so you can see which ones paid for themselves and which didn't. It's closer to someone on staff whose only job is chasing lapsed customers than to a newsletter tool with a few automated triggers bolted on.

Then the phone. Flipdish's AI phone agent answers incoming calls, takes orders and deals with the common questions: are you open, do you deliver to this area, how long will it be. Picture a Friday night where the phone keeps ringing while the one person on the counter is bagging up three orders. Some of those calls go unanswered, and an unanswered call is usually an order going to someone else. If a big share of your orders still come in by phone, this is probably the feature that matters most.

The platform also uses order data to improve upsell suggestions, decide how the menu is laid out and help with demand forecasting.

Hungrrr doesn't have anything comparable. If automated marketing or phone ordering is on your list, that more or less settles it.

Pricing

Hungrrr doesn't publish its prices. You get a quote based on your setup. Flipdish pricing is also tailored to the operator and there's no standard rate card for the full platform.

The only way to compare them properly is to get a quote from each for the same thing: the same number of locations, and the same answer on whether you need a POS, kiosks, apps, loyalty and marketing tools. When the quotes come back, look at:

  • setup or onboarding fees
  • the monthly subscription
  • any per-order fee or percentage on online orders
  • card processing rates
  • hardware costs, if you're taking kiosks or POS terminals
  • contract length and what it costs to leave

The subscription on its own can mislead you. If you go with Hungrrr for ordering and then pay separately for a POS, a marketing tool and someone to answer the phone, add all of that up. Compare that total with Flipdish's bundled price, not just Hungrrr's subscription against Flipdish's.

Flipdish publishes some of its online ordering pricing at flipdish.com/pricing-online-ordering.

Who should choose Hungrrr?

Hungrrr can make sense if you're:

  • a very small independent restaurant or takeaway that wants basic direct ordering and has no need for a POS
  • happy with your current POS, it's on Hungrrr's integration list, and you only want a website and app on top
  • tight on budget right now and can't take on a full platform yet

Even then, add up what a Hungrrr setup costs once you've included the other tools you'll need, and put that next to a Flipdish quote. The gap may be smaller than you'd expect.

Who should choose Flipdish?

Flipdish is the better choice for:

  • restaurants and takeaways that want every ordering channel on one platform
  • multi-site groups that need to control menus and marketing centrally
  • QSRs and counter-service restaurants that want kiosks too
  • operators who want AI marketing and AI phone ordering
  • any group actively trying to cut marketplace commission and grow direct orders
  • UK and Irish operators who want a platform that knows the local market

Ordering is one part of what Flipdish does. The rest is the till, the kitchen, the kiosks and the marketing, so you control your own channels and your own customer data and can do something useful with them.

Making the switch

If you're on Hungrrr now and thinking about moving to Flipdish, here's what's involved:

  1. Moving your menu over to Flipdish, or building it in the platform
  2. Setting up your new branded website and app
  3. Telling your existing customers about the change and getting them ordering through the new channel
  4. Deciding whether to move to the Flipdish POS as well, or connect Flipdish ordering to the POS you have now

Step 3 is the one people underestimate. Your regulars have your old app on their phones and your old site bookmarked. Plan for it: keep the old channel running until the new one is live, point your domain at the new site, put a note in every bag and on every receipt for a few weeks, and use a launch offer to get people to download the new app. If you're keeping your existing domain, check with both providers who controls it before you start.

Step 4 is a bigger decision. Moving to the Flipdish POS gets you the single system described above. Keeping your current POS means a smaller change on day one, but you keep the integration and any double-handling that comes with it. You can also start with ordering and move the POS over later.

Flipdish provides onboarding support through the setup. Most restaurants go live on the new direct ordering channel without much disruption to day-to-day service.

If all you need is a website and an app, Hungrrr is a reasonable option. If you want the POS, kiosks, phone ordering and marketing on the same system as your direct orders, Flipdish is the one to pick.
